Bartleby’s positive refusal continues to resonate with the OWS movement (see my previous post here). Housing Works bookstore is organizing a reading of Herman Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener: a Story of Wall Street” for next Thursday, Nov. 10 at 3pm at 60 Wall Street.
It’s a not the 24-hour Moby-Dick marathon that happens every year in New Bedford, Mass. In fact, one might think of it as a “fun run” rather than a marathon. It’ll probably last about two hours. And, hopefully, it will be followed by some really interesting conversations.

Yeah, a suicidal clerk is sort of a bummer for a revolutionary hero, but at least he’s not a fundamentalist terrorist like Guy Fawkes.
Kinda slow on the draw, yeah? Bartleby was declared the patron saint of the OccupyRefuseniks (ORs) in late September and, as a result, “Bartleby, the Scrivener” was read in three camps simultaneously for five days straight. This is not a “hipper than thou” accusation, but a plea to citizens of all Occupy zones to cease appropriating cultural products, cease name-checking, cease importing event leeches like David Amram, and start making your own stories, your own songs, your own theater, your own poems, your own paintings, your own sculptures. The Culture of the Copy belongs to the Man. Leave it alone

What’s the book about?
Short story, not a book. About a lonely sad man who man who copies legal papers before we had copy machines. Very depressing. Just had to write a paper for English Comp.
